This would never fly in most countries. The only way I could see it happening is if they tax the hell out of fuel so much that it becomes too expensive to run/gas stations go under. It would be a huge hit to the economy...

I can live with having an electric car quite happily as long as it can match the convenience of my petrol car. I need range and the ability to fill up easily. Besides that electric cars are fine. Although I’d like to have a second petrol powered weekend car still.

Bio diesel or ethanol , home brewed. If you live in the southern US states there are guys trying to commercialize the same, making it from kudzu.

Gasoline and diesel are taxed twice in Germany....
Diesel a bit less so that’s why it is/was very popular.
